A Salute to the “Ozar Beit Din” Farmers: An Evening of Religious Zionist and Haredi Cooperation

On Tu B’Shvat 5775, a unique event took place: a gathering of Religious Zionist and Haredi Rabbis – Gedolim, Roshei Yeshivot and Admorim – in order to salute the “Ozar Beit Din” farmers, true heroes of our times.

Excerpts from the Kaliver Rebbe, Rav Menachem Mendel Taub (the oldest Rebbe in Israel)

“Look at your greatness! Dear brothers, do you have any idea what you are doing? You are working so hard to succeed, and suddenly comes the Seventh Year and you have to stop. Can there be anything greater than forfeiting everything to show Hashem that we thank him? This is a great thing dear brothers. This is the greatest thing you can merit, in Hashem’s kindness. When you give this year, you are presenting a gift to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. You are giving your land! I could never be more of a Jew than this!

Excerpts from HaGaon Rav Simcha HaCohen Kook shlita (Rav and Av Beit Din Rehovoth)

Rav Kook emphasized the importance of “Ozar Beit Din” as the only way that enables complete Halachic compliance with the mitzvah of Shemita. “The most correct method today is clearly “Ozar Beit Din.” Rav Kook spoke in praise of the special quality and holiness of the fruits of Eretz Yisrael. “We so longed to eat from the fruits of the Land and be satisfied from its goodness…..I call from here to the Haredi public to give preference to “Ozar Beit Din.” Take only this! I want to deeply praise Rav Chaim Kanievsky, who we spoke to at the conference in Kibbutz Chafetz Chaim to strengthen the fruits of the Shemita – Kedushat Shvi’it. He reinforced what we said and stated that this is what the Chazon Ish wanted with all his heart! We most bolster the kedusha of Eretz Yisrael. We must desire this kedusha and not run away from it.”

Excerpts from Rav Yosef Zvi Rimon shlita (Rav of Alon Shvut South and Chairman of Halacha Education Center)

“I always believed there were three advantages in Ozar Beit Din, but it turns out there are four. Ozar Beit Din enables us to keep Shemita completely in line with Halacha. It allows Jewish farmers in Israel to continue to flourish. And it gives us the privilege of keeping ‘kedushat Shvi’it’. This kedusha emanates and reaches our homes. This is clearly one of the signs of the redemption. Rambam and Rashi wrote so much about Shemita, but neither of them had the privilege of eating one apple with ‘kedushat Shvi’it’. This privilege is thanks to you farmers! ” Then Rav Rimon went on to elucidate the fourth advantage of Ozar Beit Din: “Ozar Beit Din is the way to create Jewish unity – achdut. Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook agreed with this, as did the Chazon Ish, Rav Elyashiv zt”l and Rav Kanievsky shlita. This is the way to unite Am Yisrael, rallying around Shemita.”
